KDHE Suspends Radioactive Materials License for Beta Chem Laboratory

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued an Emergency Suspension Order suspending the radioactive materials license for Beta Chem Laboratory (BCL), 14410 W. 100th St., Lenexa. An inspection by the department found radiation contamination at several locations at the facility, constituting a potential threat to the health and safety of people who work or otherwise remain at the facility for extended periods of time.

The facility is licensed to use radiation (radioactive materials) for regular laboratory testing processes and other research purposes at the facility. The license requires the facility to follow specific procedures regarding the handling of radiation.

The order requires BCL to implement improvements to its radiation protection program, and to take several other steps to protect human health and correct deficiencies. The order is effective upon issuance of the order by the Secretary. BCL has 15 days from the issuance of the order to request an administrative hearing, or may request an informal settlement conference.
