KDHE Issues Health Advisory for Little Cedar Creek in Olathe

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a health advisory for portions of the Little Cedar Creek in Olathe. The advisory includes the area of the creek from the former Delphi Battery Plant, 400 W. Dennis St., (Dennis St. and Grant St.) to Santa Fe.

An investigation by state, county, city and facility officials has determined a drain on the property was leaking acidic water into the Little Cedar Creek Tuesday night. It was reported to KDHE Wednesday.

After further investigation, KDHE recommends all bodily contact with the water be avoided in the advisory area as a precautionary measure. Pet and livestock owners should prevent their animals from entering or drinking from the water. Skin irritation could possibly result from contact with the water.

KDHE is working with the city, county and plant officials to address the issue and monitor the condition of the creek on a regular basis throughout the advisory period. Samples have been collected from the creek and tests results will assist in determining further action needed.

KDHE will continue to monitor and evaluate the environmental impact. Once conditions warrant, the advisory will be rescinded.
