KDHE Rescinds Health Advisory for Chisholm Creek in Wichita

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a health advisory for the east fork of Chisholm Creek that was issued June 25.

Tests on water samples collected by the City of Wichita have determined the bacteria levels are no longer of concern allowing the advisory to be rescinded.

The advisory included the following areas: beginning near Hillside Avenue and 29th Street North (in Grove Park) including the Wichita I-135 Drainage Canal and extending to its confluence with the Arkansas River in Wichita.

The advisory was issued when a 36-inch interceptor sewer line crossing the Chisholm Creek broke the week of June 20 and as a result sewage flowed into the creek. The break was reported to KDHE on June 24. The sewage line break in the waterway did not affect the drinking water for the city.

On July 15 the City of Wichita completed repairs to the 36-inch interceptor sewer. This work included the construction of a concrete support wall (that the pipe sits on) and new manhole, replacement of 220 feet of pipe and encasing the pipe in concrete where it crosses the creek.
