KDHE Issues Public Health Advisory for Parts of Allen Creek in Lyon County

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a public health advisory for Allen Creek in Lyon County. This advisory extends from where Allen Creek crosses Highway 56 to approximately 15 miles south where Allen Creek enters the Neosho River on the northeast edge of Emporia.

The public health advisory results from run-off of wastewater from a confined feeding facility's irrigation site approximately three miles northwest of the city of Allen. The irrigated wastewater entered an unnamed tributary that joins Allen Creek near Highway 56.

The department strongly discourages recreational activities involving bodily contact with the water in the stream until further notice. Pet owners should take steps to prevent their animals from entering or drinking the water in the creek.

KDHE personnel are working with the confined animal feeding operation to address the water quality issue and will monitor the condition of the stream during the advisory period.
