Eightmile Creek Health Advisory Rescinded

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has rescinded the public health advisory issued in September 2000 for a section of Eightmile Creek in Butler County (from Rose Hill Bridge to the confluence with the Walnut River). This action is based upon testing conducted by KDHE in addition to the City of Rose Hill's utilization of an irrigation system to reduce the discharge into Eightmile Creek.

KDHE originally issued the advisory due to the presence of a potentially toxic form of blue-green algae, and at the time recommended that people avoid activities involving bodily contact with the water and also prevent livestock or pets from drinking the water.

KDHE and the City of Rose Hill have worked together to improve the quality of the discharge entering Eightmile Creek from the municipal wastewater stabilization lagoons. The discharge was identified as a contributing factor to the problem.

Anyone who has questions or concerns about Eightmile creek should contact the KDHE South Central District Office in Wichita at (316) 337-6020.
