KANSAS SAFE KIDS HONORED AS
NATIONAL COALITION OF THE YEAR

Washington - (October 21) - The National SAFE KIDS Campaign recently recognized Kansas SAFE KIDS with the Coalition of the Year award during the annual national conference, October 19-23. Kansas SAFE KIDS also received the Bell Sportsmanship Award for their work in the area of bicycle safety. The National SAFE KIDS Campaign and its coalitions are committed solely to the prevention of unintentional childhood injury, the number one killer of children ages 14 and under.

"The unwavering dedication from the people who work in the local community is what makes SAFE KIDS programs so successful," says Martin R. Eichelberger, M.D., president and CEO, the National SAFE KIDS Campaign, and director of Emergency Trauma and Burn Services at Children's National Medical Center. "Since this campaign began in 1987, unintentional injury and death rates have been cut by 40 percent because of the dedication of our coalitions and volunteers. The credit belongs to them."

"We're extremely proud of the accomplishments and commitment shown by Kansas SAFE KIDS and we're proud to be their partner in safety," said Roderick Bremby, Secretary, Kansas Department of Health and Environment. "This is no small accomplishment, since award winners were chosen from more than 600 coalitions and chapters nationwide."

Kansas SAFE KIDS, Inc. is a nonprofit Coalition of 67 statewide organizations and businesses dedicated to preventing unintentional injuries to Kansas children ages 0-14. Local coalitions and chapters are located in Allen, Anderson, Atchison, Clay, Dickinson, Doniphan, Douglas, Ford, Franklin, Geary, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Marion, Montgomery, Nemaha, Osage, Pottawatomie, Republic, Rice, Saline, Shawnee, Wabaunsee, and Woodson Counties, as well as Chanute, Leavenworth, Manhattan, Norton, Pittsburg, and Wichita.
