Environmental Resource Available to KPA Members

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), and the Kansas Press Association (KPA) are pleased to announce a free feature for members that will help build readership with young audiences and improve awareness of the Kansas environment. Kansas Kids Can , featuring youth oriented stories with lively graphics on recycling, composting and waste reduction, is now available via the KPA Web site.

This educational feature highlights ways Kansas children are making a difference in helping to keep our environment clean and safe. New stories specific to Kansas topics and locations are added four times a year. This free feature is available to KPA member newspapers in the member resources section of the Web site and is an excellent resource for Newspapers In Education (NIE) programs.

The recently released Fall Edition describes how some Kansas playgrounds have cushioned surfaces that are made from recycled tires. Also in this issue, young r eaders learn how proper disposal of old tires can help limit exposure to mosquitoes and West Nile Virus. This follows a humorous and informative back to school edition entitled, "What Happens to the Leftover Food on Your Plate," which describes how one of the largest school districts in Kansas turns those veggies and other foods often found on kids lunch trays into a valuable resource. compost!

Kansas Kids Can will be available as a complete drop in section or as independent segments to allow customized layout and design to meet individual format requirements. While all articles are Kansas based, a KDHE representative will also be available to assist you with obtaining contacts in your circulation area for additional local story angles or activity ideas.

Advantages include:

  • Excellent resource for NIE programs that directly relates to Kansas, our environment and your student readers
  • Presented in a format that appeals directly to children
  • Turnkey drop-in feature or independent cut and paste segments
  • A new colorful and exciting feature four times a year
  • KDHE contact to assist with identifying contacts for related localized content
