Recycling Center to Hold Open House in Garden City

The Garden City Recycling Center, one block south of Fulton at 125 J.C. Street, will host an open house from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 14. The event offers an opportunity for youngsters and adults to become more familiar with the city's recycling operation and will feature special activities and demonstrations throughout the day.

Representatives from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) will be on hand with games, models and demonstrations on recycling, composting, landfill operations and groundwater management. KDHE has also arranged for performances by Stan Slaughter, the eco-troubadour, who will present interactive and educational musical programs on waste management topics.

Mid-day visitors can check out a live remote radio broadcast by KKJQ's Jim Turner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and enjoy a free barbeque lunch by Planks and Truelove barbeque (while supplies last).

Public Works Director Sam Curran hopes the event will raise awareness and increase use of the city's recycling center. "We're proud of our recycling facility and hope more Garden City residents will make use of this service," said Curran. "When we recycle, it benefits both our community and the environment," he added.
