WHAT:

KANSAS KIDS FITNESS AND SAFETY DAY 2004: Almost 700 third graders will be on hand, running, jumping, and otherwise moving across the grounds of Cedar Crest in Topeka. Events to promote physical activity and to celebrate "Splash Into Safety!" - SAFE KIDS Week 2004 will take place not only at Cedar Crest, but also at historic Ft. Larned, and at 40 other sites across Kansas. More than 17,000 third graders, their teachers, and parents will be participating.

Coastie from U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary
10:15 - noon Fitness & Safety Day Activities

WHERE:

McLennan Park at Cedar Crest, 6 th and Fairlawn, Topeka

WHY:

Unintentional injuries are still the leading cause of death for Kansas kids. Preventable injuries to children peak during the summer when children are less supervised, have more free time and engage in more outdoor activities. Kansas SAFE KIDS will be focusing efforts on preventing drowning during SAFE KIDS Week. Unfortunately, decreases in unintentional drowning injury death rates among Kansas children lag behind decreases nationally (9% decrease in Kansas compared to 29% decrease nationally.)

Note to the Media:
Lists of Kansas schools participating at Cedar Crest and information about other host sites in the state are attached.

The National SAFE KIDS Campaign will release a comprehensive research study on childhood drowning and near-drowning including data about recreational water activities on April 28. A copy of the report will be available at the May 7 event. For more information on the National report, contact the National SAFE KIDS communications department at 202-662-0600 or visit www.safekids.org .
