Governor Sebelius Announces Solid Waste GrantsGovernor Kathleen Sebelius today announced the award of $1.01 million in grants for recycling, composting and solid waste source reduction programs. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) will distribute the grants to 25 cities, counties, businesses and regional programs selected by an advisory committee appointed by the Governor. The grants, ranging from $800 to $100,000, were funded by a $1 per ton state fee on solid waste entering Kansas landfills. Projects receiving grant funding included the enhancement of local recycling programs, yard waste composting and using waste wood, wheat straw and recycled plastic to manufacture innovative new products. By removing more material from the waste stream through recycling, composting, reuse and source reduction, the grant program helps conserve valuable landfill space and reduces the need to develop new solid waste facilities. "These grants will improve services in Kansas' communities and rural areas while conserving important resources," said Governor Sebelius. "Creating new products and materials through recycling and composting efforts will offer businesses the opportunity to use material that might otherwise be put in our landfills." KDHE Secretary Roderick. Bremby added, "The competitive solid waste grant program is an
example of how the state can partner with businesses and local governments to improve solid waste
management." Click here for the SFY 2004 RD #12 Grant Awards List |
