Teen pregnancy rates are decreasing for Kansas residents according to the 2001 Kansas Annual Summary of Vital Statistics published by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). Teen pregnancies are defined as the sum of live births, fetal deaths and abortions. There were 5,818 teen pregnancies to Kansas residents in 2001. The pregnancy rate for females ages 10-19 decreased 13.5 percent from 33.3 pregnancies per 1,000 females (in the age-group 10 -19) in 1991 to 28.8 in 2001. Teen pregnancy rates for females ages 10-17 decreased 17.4 percent during the same time period.
"We are encouraged by the reduction in teen pregnancy rates," said KDHE Assistant Secretary and State Registrar Dr. Lorne Phillips. "The larger decrease among teens 10-17 is especially good news."
During 2001, 38,832 live births occurred to Kansas residents, representing a birth rate of 14.4 per 1,000 population. This was a 2.0 percent decrease from the 2000 rate of 14.7. The out-of- wedlock birth ratio has continued an upward trend over the years in both Kansas and the U.S. Out-of-wedlock births comprised 29.9 percent of all live births that occurred to Kansas residents in 2001. The overall infant death rate for 2001 was 7.3 infant deaths per 1,000 live births, an increase of 9.0 percent from the rate of 6.7 in 2000.
The number of Kansas resident deaths (24,590) represented a 0.4 percent increase from the 2000 total of 24,676. The Kansas crude death rate was 9.1 deaths per 1,000 population. The state's age-adjusted mortality rate, which corrects for differences in the age makeup of Kansas residents and is based on the 2000 population standard, was 8.5 deaths per 1,000 population and was identical to the rate in 2000.
In 2001, the number of couples married in Kansas (20,457) varied little from the previous year (20,426). The marriage rate (7.6) was identical to the rate in 2000. Over half (10,591) of the marriages in 2001 were first marriages for both the bride and groom.
A long downward trend in Kansas marriage dissolutions, that began in the early 1990s, continued in 2001. The 9,885 divorces and annulments represented a 2.2 percent decrease compared to the 2000 figure of 10,105 dissolutions.
The Center for Health and Environmental Statistics prepares the Kansas Annual Summary of Vital Statistics as part of KDHE=s fundamental responsibility for assessing the health of Kansas residents. The data compiled are used by program managers and policy makers at state and local levels to address health concerns.
