As we approach of the 30th anniversary of the Clean Water Act, October 18, 2002, it's important to recognize Kansas, as well as the nation, for its efforts and accomplishments to correct water pollution problems and to prevent future ones.
Most of the improvements to Kansas waterways have resulted from the construction of new sewage treatment plants by cities and industries, and control of polluted runoff from large livestock feedlots. The majority of the remaining water pollution is caused by nonpoint pollutant sources, which are sources that do not require a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit. Virtually any thing we do for work or pleasure can result in a discharge of pollutants.
The Kansas Clean Water Pledge was developed to help individuals and organizations be aware of water pollution and the actions that each one of us can take to correct and prevent it. KDHE has promoted the "Clean Water Neighbor Pledge" for several months and has encouraged everyone to pledge to be a "Clean Water Neighbor."
We are pleased to announce that more than 1000 signatures are on the pledge at this time. A Clean Water Neighbor Celebration Event is planned to honor the achievement of this program.
KDHE Secretary Clyde Graeber will present the 1000th signer of the Clean Water Neighbor Pledge with a Clean Water Neighbor Certificate. In addition, several individuals who have recruited pledges, will also be recognized for their service.
The event will be hosted by the Watershed Management Section, at the Curtis State Office building in the Azure Conference Room, 1000 SW Jackson Suite 400 on October 17, 2002 at 2:30 pm. Any individual wishing to take the Clean Water Pledge may contact KDHE's Watershed Management Section at 785-296-4195.
