The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued an administrative order assessing a $8,000 civil penalty against Cornejo & Sons, Inc. for illegal disposal of municipal solid waste and medical waste into their construction and demolition (C & D) landfill located in Wichita. Such landfills are designed without liners and other environmental safeguards as required at municipal solid waste landfills which may legally receive such wastes. C & D landfills may only be used for the disposal of inert wastes such as wood, bricks, concrete, storm debris, and general building demolition materials.
The order also requires the company to remove all unauthorized materials from the landfill, and segregate and dispose of them properly as required under state environmental regulations.
Cornejo & Sons is required to pay the fine within 30 days of October 25. The order is subject to administrative appeal.
