State Issues Health Advisory for Portions of Cow Creek
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a public health advisory for First Cow Creek and Cow Creek in the City of Pittsburg. This advisory extends from Atkinson Road downstream to the 69 Highway bridge.
This advisory stems from the continued release of 500 - 800 gallons per hour of unidentified wastewater associated with a mine vent northwest of Pittsburg. The City of Pittsburg has inspected the municipal main sewer lines, manholes and lift station and the source has not yet been identified.
The department strongly discourages any activities involving bodily contact with water in the creek, pending the collection of additional data and the return of the original water quality condition. KDHE personnel will monitor concentration of bacteria in this stream on a regular basis throughout the advisory period.
