Project "Clean Sweep" Helps Farmers and Ranchers Dispose of Pesticides
Businesses may also participate for a fee
This month Project "Clean Sweep," conducted by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), will help farmers and ranchers to properly dispose of unwanted, unused, canceled, or obsolete pesticides, with no questions asked, and at no cost. Businesses may also participate this year, but will be charged a disposal fee of $1.15 per pound.
"Clean Sweep" will be accepting unwanted pesticides at the Ford County Weed Office (at the old landfill), 10972 Road 113, Tuesday, November 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; in Pratt at the Recycling Center, 1102 S. Main, Wednesday, November 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and in Wellington at the Sumner Co. Weed Office, 206 E. Botkin, Thursday, November 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
"It's especially important for farmers and ranchers to search their barns, sheds and chemical storage areas for canceled products," says Jim Rudeen of KDHE. "Continued use of some canceled products may be illegal. Our goal with 'Clean Sweep' is simply to eliminate leftover stockpiles of these pesticides on the farm and ranch."
