KDHE Accepting Written Comments on Elwood Seaboard Facility
Public Hearing set for Dec. 13
Seaboard Farms is proposing to construct a slaughterhouse for processing swine, including a wastewater treatment system, in Elwood, Kansas. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is now accepting written public comments on a draft wastewater permit for the facility until December 13 when a public hearing will be held.
Written comments should be mailed to: Kansas Department of Health and Environment, ATTN: Permit Clerk, Technical Services Section, Bureau of Water, Building 283 - Forbes Field, Topeka, Kansas 66620.
A public hearing on the draft permit has been scheduled for Wednesday, December 13 at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium of the Elwood school at 12th and Vermont in Elwood. The sole purpose of the hearing is to allow individuals to present information to KDHE for consideration regarding the proposed permit.
All interested parties will be given a reasonable opportunity to speak at the hearing. In order to give everyone an opportunity to present their views, it may be necessary to limit oral presentations to five minutes per person. Due to these possible time constraints, it is recommended that those planning to speak provide the hearing officer with written copies of their comments at the hearing.
Persons with disabilities may request accommodations in order to participate in the hearing and may request the draft permit in an accessible format. Requests for accommodation should be made at least five working days in advance of the hearing by calling KDHE at (785) 296-5506.
