KDHE Revokes Permit for Red's Tire
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued an administrative order revoking the waste tire processing permit for Red's Tire Sales, Inc. and Stretch Manufacturing, Inc., 902 Industrial Drive, Galena.
A series of inspections conducted by the department on September 13, 1999; April 30, 2000; and July 20, 2000 has confirmed that the facility has been in violation of the permit on an ongoing basis.
The permit stipulates that tires are to be processed within one working day of receipt; no tires are to be stored outdoors; and no more than 500 whole tires are to be stored indoors at any time. The facility was documented to have been in constant violation of these terms, as well as disposing of tire wastes in an unpermitted area.
In addition to the permit violations, staff also noted violations of regulations that apply to all Kansas waste tire processing facilities. These violations included a failure of the facility to store tires in a manner to discourage insect and rodent infestations, and a failure to restrict access to the facility.
The company filed for an administrative appeal on October 5. No final appeal date has been set.
