KDHE Fines Van Winkle Livestock Co. for Water Quality Violations

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued an administrative order assessing a $20,000 civil penalty against Van Winkle Livestock Co., Abilene. The department has determined that Van Winkle violated terms of a formal consent agreement which the company and KDHE finalized on December 17, 1999.

In addition to the fine, the order requires company operator Mark Van Winkle and property owner Jon Clemence to remove livestock from the company facility and properly dispose of animal waste which has accumulated in the feeding pens and a roadside ditch. The order also requires the company to hire a consultant to perform soil testing and provide the results to KDHE.

The company has until October 2 to appeal the department's order.
