KDHE Issues Water Permit to F.B. Operations

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a water pollution control permit to F.B. Operations. The permit will allow the company to construct and operate a beef processing plant and tannery at the Goff Industrial Park in Arkansas City.

Based upon comments received at a July 21 public hearing, and others accepted during the customary public comment period, KDHE has made the following modifications to the permit:

• Clarification was made to the sampling frequency to ensure that waste water samples are collected at a minimum of twice per week to check for biochemical oxygen demand, suspended solids, oil and grease, total chromium, hexavalent chromium, and pH.
• The holding pond must be operated in a manner that will minimize odors.
• The holding pond liner must be inspected annually, and any needed repairs must be started as soon as possible.
• Records of inspections, maintenance, and repairs to the holding pond liner must be maintained on-site and readily available for review by KDHE staff.
• The company must immediately notify KDHE if a holding pond liner failure is detected.

The addition of the holding pond was proposed by the company and is designed to enhance operational flexibility and control of the plant's wastewater treatment system.
