Water Well Presentation and Local Environmental Protection Program Meeting Set for July 20-21 in Great Bend

A private water well drilling demonstration sponsored by the Kansas Groundwater Association (KGWA) will take place beginning at 8:30 a.m on Tuesday, July 20 at Kelly's Water Well, 3.8 miles south of Tenth Street in Great Bend on Highway 281. Jeff Goad, owner, will show proper techniques for drilling, grouting, and finishing a water well. Manufacturers, suppliers, and representatives from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the KGWA will be on site to answer questions. The presentation will end when the well is complete.

The demo is being presented in conjunction with the Kansas Local Environmental Protection Program (LEPP) Annual Meeting on Wednesday, July 21st at the Holiday Inn, 3017 W. 10th St., in Great Bend. Officials will discuss state and local water quality management issues.

The LEPP is financed through State Water Plan funds and aids in the development of waste water and private well water codes by county health departments and other local authorities. Development of a sanitary code is an important first step in addressing the overall water quality needs of a community.

"LEPP funding allows counties to create customized water protection plans which compliment state and federal water quality efforts," said LEPP Program Manager Debra Baker of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. "It also allows for local staff to be available for technical assistance in water quality concerns for cities within the county."

Plans developed with LEPP funds outline community plans to manage private waste water treatment systems, solid waste, household hazardous waste, nonpoint source pollution, and private water wells. -30-
