State Issues Health Advisory for Portion of Cimarron River
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a public health advisory for the Cimarron River from 12 miles upstream of the Arkalon Recreation Center (Seward County) to the Oklahoma border east of Highway 23 (Meade County) where the Cimarron River exits Kansas.
This advisory stems from the overflow of livestock wastewater from a cattle feeding operation located approximately 12 miles upstream from the intersection of Highway 54 and the Cimarron River in Seward County. Tests conducted by KDHE will determine if concentrations of fecal coliform bacteria and other pollutants exceed applicable water quality criteria.
KDHE strongly discourages swimming, wading, boating, fishing and other activities involving bodily contact with the waters of this river, pending the collection of additional data and the confirmation of acceptable water quality conditions. KDHE will monitor concentrations of bacteria and other pollutants in the river throughout the advisory period.
