MEDIA ADVISORY: Radon Achievements to be Recognized

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment will recognize two Kansas teachers and their students for their outstanding achievements in promoting radon education in Kansas.

Certificates will be presented to teachers Mark Hallum and Glenn Presley at a brief ceremony on Thursday, May 13 at 2:00 p.m. at Larned Middle School, 904 Corse, Larned. Students will receive T-shirts courtesy of the KDHE Radon Program. KDHE staff will be on hand to answer questions.

"We are proud of what these young people have accomplished with the leadership and guidance of their teachers," says Acting Secretary of Health and Environment Clyde D. Graeber. "Their accomplishment demonstrates that the partnership between schools, government, and the citizens of Kansas to reduce radon exposure is an effective one."

Hallum and Presley, together with their students, are constructing a radon-resistant home. Moreover, they are documenting their work, complete with photographs. One aim of the project is to provide an example that will encourage home building contractors to adopt radon-resistant building methods.

Radon is a naturally occurring, odorless, invisible radioactive gas that can seep into homes and other buildings and accumulate in sufficient concentrations to pose a chronic health risk. The gas can also enter private water wells. Radon is considered the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.
