Topeka Healthcare Center Fined $2,500

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued an order assessing a $2,500 civil penalty against Topeka Healthcare Center, 711 SW Garfield Ave., Topeka, for violations of state nursing home regulations.

KDHE staff inspected the facility on February 4, 5, 8 and 10 and issued a correction order on February 26 citing the facility for failure to meet standards for quality of care and quality of life. KDHE staff conducted a follow-up inspection on March 8-11, 15 and 16 that determined the deficiencies had not yet been corrected.

The department assesses a fine when a facility fails to correct the deficiencies by the second visit. Department surveyors continue to check the facility to ensure the deficiencies are corrected.

The order is subject to appeal to the Secretary of Health and Environment.
