KDHE to Conduct Public Hearing on Proposed Sunflower Pork Facility

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) will hold a public hearing

to gather additional input on a proposed confined feeding facility for swine in Coffee County. KDHE is considering a proposal to issue a wastewater control permit to Sunflower Pork, Inc., located near Westphalia, Kansas. The draft permit calls for a new feeding facility with a capacity of 9,600 swine weighing less than 55 pounds.

Persons wishing to comment on the proposed permit may attend the public hearing at

7:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 8, 1998 at the Metropolitan Topeka Airport Conference Room, Forbes Field, 6700 SW Topeka Avenue, Topeka, Kansas. Written comments may also be submitted with a postmark no later than December 8, 1998 to: Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Bureau of Water, Industrial Programs Section, Forbes Field Building 283, Topeka, KS 66620.

The Secretary of Health and Environment will make a final permit decision after considering all comments received during the public hearing and public notice process and reviewing requirements of state laws and regulations.
