HIV/AIDS Training Offered

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), the American Red Cross HIV/AIDS Network, and Kansas State University (KSU) are offering "1997 Basic HIV/AIDS Training: Prevention Counseling," Wednesday and Thursday, October 8 and 9 in Wichita. This course is part of a collaborative effort by local and state agencies to provide HIV/AIDS training statewide.

Participants will learn basic knowledge and skills necessary for providing HIV prevention counseling services to individuals who may be at risk of HIV infection. "This course is for nurses, social workers, teachers, health care workers, counselors, and anyone else interested in HIV/AIDS," said Barb Houser, KDHE HIV/AIDS Training Specialist.

The registration fee is $40 for materials and snacks. For an additional fee, continuing education hours are available for nurses and drug treatment counselors. Social workers may submit attendance verification for retroactive credit at the time of licensure renewal. Other continuing education hours may be available upon request to KSU. The course is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, with one hour for lunch.

Advance registration and payment are required. Interested individuals should call KSU at (800) 432-8222. Additional course and site information will be provided with advance registration. Space is generally limited to 30 participants. Anyone requiring special accommodations should contact KDHE at (913) 296-6545 at least ten days prior to the course. All reasonable accommodations will be made with advance notice.
