Mineralization Study

About the Study

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is embarking on a domestic water well project, in partnership with the Kansas Water Office (KWO), Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA), and Kansas Geologic Survey (KGS). This project is a continuation of a groundwater study implemented by KGS in 2009, and is focused on analyzing the impacts of naturally-occurring minerals on water used for human consumption from private water wells in the southwest Kansas region. The project invites homeowners within the study area to provide voluntary water well samples, using simple equipment provided by KDHE. The study area includes parts of Hamilton, Kearny, Finney, Gray and Ford counties. The samples will be analyzed for select parameters related to the study, and the KGS will evaluate the results as part of the longer-term study. Wells not used for human drinking water are not part of this project (e.g. lawn and garden, irrigation, livestock, windmill, etc.).

Additional Information

Well owners within the study area will receive two letters with information pertaining to this study, as well as a letter providing results after sampling and analysis is complete. You may have already received a letter from the Kansas Water Office (KWO), introducing the study and providing general information.

The second letter will be one from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and it will be sent out just prior to the scheduled sampling period for your county. This letter can be easily identified by its inclusion of a Well ID# in the subject line.

Please see the sampling schedule provided on this website for more information on when things are happening in your county.

If you have questions about which letter you may have received and what to do next, please contact KDHE at 785-296-8800. For more information about this study in general, please call KWO at 785-296-3185.

Results

KDHE will send a letter containing individual sample results to well owners four to six weeks following sample submittal. If you have received your results and you have questions, please contact us at 785-296-7770.
