State Implementation Projects for Preventing Secondary Conditions and Promoting the Health of People with Disabilities
The Kansas Disability and Health Program will: (1) sustain a state office for preventing secondary conditions and promoting the health of people with disabilities as a State public health priority; (2) establish and implement partnerships with universities or state health departments or other state agencies to support and complement project activities; (3) support an advisory function to coordinate and provide policy and program guidance in the State; (4) implement the State strategic plan instrument for health promotion for persons with disabilities; (5) maintain and refine existing public health surveillance or survey activities related to disability and/or secondary conditions to target current or ongoing prevention and health promotion efforts and track and evaluate impact of program activities; and (6) monitor and evaluate programs to improve the health and quality of life of people with disabilities.
Funding was also received to engage in these additional disability and health related activities:(1) implement evidence-based public health promotion interventions; (2) prepare for disasters and other emergency situations; and (3) utilize existing supplemental surveillance data.
The Kansas Disability and Health program views disabilities as occurring on a functional level rather than a disease specific level (disability occurs in different domains independent of specific diagnoses). Activities should address multiple conditions or diagnoses across the lifespan.
Ks Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence/Ks Assoc. of Centers for Independent Living and KDHE Collaborative Project
The Education, Training, and Enhanced Services to End Violence Against and Abuse of Women with Disabilities Grant Program (Disability Grant Program) was created by the Violence Against Women Act of 2005 (VAWA 2005). Congress, OVW, and victim advocates recognized the need to focus on domestic violence, dating violence, stalking and sexual assault against individuals with disabilities due to the proliferation of such violence and the gaps in service provision and the criminal justice response for this population. The goal of this program is to build the capacity of such jurisdictions to address such violence against individuals with disabilities through the creation of multi-disciplinary teams.
Disability Grant Program recipients will provide training, consultation, and information on domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, and sexual assault against individuals with disabilities and enhance direct services to such individuals.
