The food protection program is directed at the prevention of foodborne illness. Activities include establishment of food protection standards, complaint investigations, education, establishment inspection and licensing. Staff also respond to natural disasters and transportation accidents involving food and consumer products.

Field inspections and follow-up on consumer complaints are carried out by KDHE Food and Drug Inspectors. Food protection in many counties is carried out under contract with the Secretary of KDHE.

In FY 2004, the Food Safety and Consumer Protection Program accomplished the following:

  • Conducted 19,223 inspections
  • Inspected 17,058 Food Service Establishments
  • Inspected 148 Lodging Facilities
  • Investigated 2,119 Consumer Complaints
  • Responded to 203 disasters involving food
