The reference laboratory identifies non-enteric bacteria from all body sites. These organisms are usually atypical, fastidious, or slow growing and present a challenge to identify for the typical clinical laboratory. The organisms are identified by traditional laboratory methods including colonial morphology on culture media, sheep blood hemolysis, Gram stain reaction, and the ability to use various chemical substrates for growth.
