KDHE Home - Health - Bureau of Health Facilities - Occupancy and Staffing Data

Adult Care Home Occupancy and Staffing Data

The occupancy and staffing data presented on this page are extracted from the Adult Care Home Semi-Annual Report which is prepared for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and  Department on Aging by the University of Kansas School of Social Welfare Office of Social Policy Analysis, Doug Marty, Project Coordinator. The data is gathered on a calendar year semi-annual basis via questionnaires sent to all Kansas licensed nursing facilities, nursing facilities for mental health,  assisted living facilities, and residential health care facilities ( for definitions of these facilities click here )

Occupancy data is calculated by multiplying the number of licensed beds by the number of days in the reporting period to determine the maximum number of inpatient days. The number of actual patient days is then divided by the maximum number of days to yield  the occupancy rate. Staffing information is calculated based upon direct care staffing and resident census information for a reference week specified by KDHE. Direct care staff is defined as registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, medication aides, licensed mental health technicians, nurse aides, and nurse aide trainees.  Registered nurses who serve as Directors of Nursing in facilities over 60 beds are not included in direct care staffing ratios. Staffing ratios are calculated by dividing the number of hours direct care staff worked in a 24-hour period by the number of residents in the facility during that same period. The ratios do not necessarily show the number of direct care staff present at any given time, or reflect the amount of care given to any one resident.

Occupancy and staffing information are both self-reported by facilities and are not independently verified. Please note that the data presented here is based upon those facilities which submitted timely and usable semi-annual reports thus it includes most but not all of the licensed facilities during the reporting period. The facility occupancy and staffing data is grouped alphabetically initially by county then by city within the county.   Questions about this data should be directed to Pat Maben , 785-296-1240.   Click here for copies of the current versions of the Long Term Care Semi-Annual Report form.
