Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant

Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant Consent Order

No. 05-E-0111

Introduction
The Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant site near DeSoto, Kansas was used by the Department of Defense (DoD) for production of propellants from 1942 to 1992. The site is divided into subsites based on the use of individual areas where components and intermediate products of the final propellants were stored, mixed, dried, washed, tested, finished, and packed. The subsites also include support facilities such as laboratories, a wastewater and drinking water treatment plant, power plants, disposal areas, vehicle and other maintenance shops, and burning areas for destruction of explosives-contaminated material.

Subsites are identified in the Identified Site List (ISL) database as Areas of Concern (Sunflower AOC #1 through 24) and Solid Waste Management Units (Sunflower SWMU# 1 through 68). Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant Consent Order No. 05-E-0111 was negotiated to address assessment , remediation, and monitoring of contaminated media while the property is being developed for private use. Additional information can be obtained for the site by reviewing the ISL summary for each AOC or SWMU on the ISL Web Page at http://www.kdheks.gov/remedial/isl_disclaimer.html or by contacting KDHE at 785-291-3252.
