Mission: The mission of the Bureau of Environmental Remediation is to respond to environmental emergencies and to manage environmental contamination through pollution source control, containment, or remedial action. The program responsibilities are: investigation of pollution occurrences and sources from spills, illegal dumping, abandoned facilities, and landfills; storage tank regulations; surface mining site regulation and designing and overseeing remedial activities at contaminated sites.

Current and Upcoming Events
  • Coleman - Northeast Draft Corrective Action Decision. KDHE is soliciting public comments regarding a draft Corrective Action Decision (CAD) to address environmental contamination at the Coleman - Northeast site. The draft CAD and other pertinent information are available at the link above. Comments will be accepted from August 22 to September 21, 2018.
  • Emergency Abandoned Mine Land Response in Pittsburg. KDHE's Surface Mining Unit responded to an emergency subsidence issue due to underground coal mining. The safety concerns were addressed within two hours and staff are working to complete the response.
  • Deer Creek II Reclamation Project, Cherokee County The Surface Mining Unit has completed the Deer Creek II Reclamation Project through the Abandoned Mine Land Program. This project protects public safety while also providing an enhanced natural environment for wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities.
